Artist's Statement
When I work, I don't start with a specific goal in mind or any preconception of how a piece should evolve. I often begin by 'attacking' the surface without much thought to how it appears, allowing each mark to determine the next. I try to maintain a style of execution that is almost purely instinctual, automatic and mood driven, and I derive most of my inspiration from subconscious sources. For example, as a starting point I might utilize an obscure image that reveals itself one night in a dream, or I might begin with a particularly satisfying shape that appears unexpectedly in my mind’s eye. Or, I might kick off a piece by using a certain group of colors that I find myself fixating upon.

I have found that employing this kind of open, ‘reflexive,’ process allows me to explore ideas more freely and honestly, and I end up having a more liberated working experience. Ultimately, my goal is that these qualities will be apparent in what the viewer sees and experiences as well.
I consider myself a thrill junkie when I’m producing art. Working every piece is like flying to an alien planet. I never know where I’ll end up or what I'll find there. Sometimes I end up in a stinky dump, because just like all of us, I have pain, I have sorrow and I have big fear. I am not interested in pretending it's not there or trying to suppress it. I want to explain it, share it and feel it fully through my work.
I believe that this is art's most essential and fundamental function - to allow the artist to express any feeling or impulse without causing harm, but also to pull something beneficial out of the darkness.
